Stephens County, Okla. (KFOR) — Ammunition and the casualties of Steve Southerland’s internal, artistic war fight for space on his rural acreage.

“Oh man,” he smiles. “10-foot deep I’m livin’ it. Always bills in the mailbox livin’ it. Always ¾ tank empty livin’ it.”

He’s always been pretty good at taking scrap metal and making things no one else could possibly see.

“I get the idea in my head and I just build it.”

A few days before we got there, he’d just finished an 8-foot-tall sculpture, a humanoid dragonfly perched atop a long cattail.

We remarked, “There’s something in you that just keeps creating.”

Southerland responds, “Oh man. I can’t stop!”

There are projects like that hiding in the grass all around his house, hard to move, hard to sell. He does better with hat bands and painted feathers.
